”Between Us” explores the profound bonds that unite women and the power of the body. This sculpture is made from materials found in modern homes - specifically, my mother's home - newspaper, aluminum foil, masking tape, sticks, old bedding, plaster, etc.
The materials reflect how a house becomes a home when the mother is revered,
and reimagines the female body not as an object but as an archive of lived experience, carrying the wisdom of time, history, and survival.
The work draws from a range of literary and poetic traditions. It evokes the ancient Greek oracles of Delphi, where the female voice once carried divine wisdom, echoing themes found throughout classical literature and mythology. It also resonates with Eastern traditions, such as the “red thread of fate” in Chinese mythology, a symbol of the deep connections that bind us across time and space, linking the past to the future.
The red thread forming a cat's cradle between her hands is a metaphor for connection and the common experience of human life through a game played across generations and cultures.
Additionally, the sculpture aligns with literary traditions that reclaim the female body as a vessel of memory, experience, and resistance. I draw from the fragments of classical poets like Sappho, whose work evokes the complexity and depth of feminine presence, as well as modern feminist writings that seek to redefine womanhood and lineage.
By merging these diverse influences with an experimental material process, my sculpture becomes a layered symbol—a convergence of myth, history, and the creation of the future. It challenges conventional representations and honors the enduring, intergenerational ties among women.
